If you are traveling by car, start your journey from Reykjavik. Take Route 1 (the Ring Road) heading east. After approximately 140 km, take the exit toward Route 26 towards Hella. Continue on Route 26 for about 60 km until you reach Þórsmörk. From here, follow the signs for the Laugavegur Trail. Continue driving on the gravel road until you reach the trailhead for Fimmvörðuháls. Park your car in the designated parking area. The trail to Innri-Fellsfoss begins from this point. The total drive takes roughly 3 hours and make sure to check road conditions, especially during winter months.
Public Transportation
If you prefer public transportation, you can take a bus from Reykjavik to Þórsmörk. The bus service operates daily, and you can find schedules on the Strætó website or other local bus companies. The journey takes about 3-4 hours. Upon arriving at Þórsmörk, you will need to hike approximately 7 km to reach Innri-Fellsfoss along the Fimmvörðuháls trail. Make sure to wear appropriate hiking gear and carry sufficient water and snacks for the hike. Note that bus tickets will typically cost between 5000 to 7000 ISK one way.
Hiking
Once you have reached the Fimmvörðuháls trailhead, begin your hike towards Innri-Fellsfoss. The trail is well-marked and offers breathtaking views along the way. Follow the trail for about 5 km, which will take approximately 1.5 to 2 hours depending on your pace. As you approach the waterfall, listen for the sound of rushing water, and be prepared for some steep sections. Bring a camera to capture the stunning scenery. The entire hike from the trailhead to Innri-Fellsfoss and back is around 12 km.
