Car
If you're traveling by car, start from the nearest major town, which is Hella. Head east on Route 1 (the Ring Road) towards Selfoss. After approximately 30 km, you'll reach a junction. Take Route 26 towards Þingvellir National Park. Continue on Route 26 for about 70 km until you reach the junction with Route 32. Turn left onto Route 32 and drive for about 20 km. You will see signs for Nauthúsagil. Follow the signs until you reach the parking area near the entrance to the canyon.
Public Transportation
For those using public transportation, take a bus from Reykjavik to Hella. Multiple companies operate this route, and the journey takes approximately 1.5 hours. From Hella, you will need to book a local taxi or shuttle service to reach Nauthúsagil, as public buses do not go directly to the canyon. Expect taxi fares to be around 10,000 ISK (approximately $75 USD) for the short trip to Nauthúsagil. Make sure to arrange your return trip in advance.
Hiking
If you're already on the Laugavegur Trail, you can hike to Nauthúsagil from the nearest campsite, which is Þórsmörk. Start your hike by heading towards the marked trails leading east from Þórsmörk. The hike is about 8 km and takes around 2-3 hours. Follow the signs and the marked path towards the canyon. Be sure to have proper hiking gear and check the weather conditions before setting out.
