If you're traveling by car, start from the nearest town, Hella, and head east on Route 26. After approximately 25 km, turn left onto Route 1 (the Ring Road) and continue for about 30 km. Look for signs directing you to Þórsmörk and Fimmvörðuháls. You will need to take a secondary road (F-roads may be required) leading to the hiking trailhead for Fimmvörðuháls. Note that some F-roads might require a 4x4 vehicle. Follow the Fimmvörðuháls trail, and after about 3-4 hours of hiking, you will reach Steinbogafoss, which is a stunning waterfall along the trail.
Public Transportation
To reach Steinbogafoss using public transportation, take a bus from Reykjavík to Hella. Buses are available through various services, such as Sterna and Reykjavik Excursions. The journey takes about 1.5 hours. From Hella, you can catch a local bus or taxi to the trailhead of Fimmvörðuháls. Once at the trailhead, you will need to hike for about 3-4 hours along the Fimmvörðuháls trail to reach Steinbogafoss. Ensure to check the bus schedules in advance, as they may vary based on the season.
Hiking
Assuming you are already on the Laugavegur Trail, Steinbogafoss is accessible via the Fimmvörðuháls hiking trail. Follow the marked paths towards Fimmvörðuháls. The hike will take approximately 3-4 hours, depending on your pace. Be prepared for varying weather conditions and carry sufficient water and snacks. The waterfall is a beautiful spot to rest and take photos. Follow the trail markers, and you'll be led directly to Steinbogafoss.
