Botnstjörn: A Scenic Gem in Ásbyrgi

Getting There

• Car

  If you're traveling by car, head to Ásbyrgi, which is located in the northeastern part of Iceland. From Akureyri, take Route 1 (the Ring Road) eastbound for about 80 km until you reach Route 862. Turn left onto Route 862 and follow the signs for Ásbyrgi. The drive will take approximately 1.5 hours. Upon reaching Ásbyrgi, look for the coordinates XFXP+CH7, which will direct you to Botnstjörn. There’s ample parking available near the scenic spot.

• Public Transportation

  For those using public transportation, take a bus from Akureyri to Ásbyrgi. Check the schedules on the Strætó website for the most current routes and times. The journey will take around 2 hours. Once you arrive at the Ásbyrgi bus stop, you can either walk to Botnstjörn, which is approximately a 20-minute walk (about 1.5 km), or arrange for a taxi if you prefer not to walk. Ensure to confirm the taxi availability in advance, as it may not be frequent.

• Walking

  If you're already in the Ásbyrgi area and prefer to walk, follow the well-marked trails leading to Botnstjörn. From the Ásbyrgi visitor center, head east along the designated walking paths, which will take you through beautiful landscapes. The walk is scenic and should take approximately 30 minutes to reach Botnstjörn.
