Getting There

• Car

  If you're traveling by car, make your way to Thingvellir National Park. From Akureyri, head south on Route 1 for approximately 350 km. Once you reach the Thingvellir area, look for signs directing you to the park. Enter the park and follow the road towards the visitor center. After the visitor center, continue driving on the main road until you see signs for Hestagjá. Turn onto the Unnamed Road where Hestagjá is located. The destination coordinates are approximately 64.2499° N, 21.1335° W.

• Public Transportation

  To reach Hestagjá via public transportation, take a bus from Akureyri to Reykjavik, followed by a bus from Reykjavik to Thingvellir. The bus service to Thingvellir is limited, so check the schedules in advance. Once you arrive at Thingvellir, you will need to walk or use a taxi service to reach Hestagjá, which is about 5 km from the main bus stop in the park. Ensure you have the contact information for local taxi services handy, as they may be needed for the last leg of the journey.

  If you're already in Thingvellir National Park and need to reach Hestagjá from the visitor center or main bus stop, consider taking a taxi. The distance is approximately 5 km, and taxi fares may vary, so it’s advisable to ask for an estimate before getting in. This option is ideal for those who prefer not to walk.
