Car
If you're driving, start your journey from Akureyri, the largest city in the Northeastern Region. Head southeast on Route 1 (the Ring Road) towards Egilsstaðir. After about 90 km, turn onto Route 901 towards Herðubreiðarlindir. Continue on this route until you reach the junction with Route 908. Follow Route 908, which is a gravel road, leading directly to Askja. Be aware that this road can be rough and may require a 4WD vehicle. The total driving time is approximately 3-4 hours, depending on road conditions.
Public Transportation
For those using public transport, take a bus from Akureyri to Egilsstaðir. Several companies operate this route, and the journey takes around 5 hours. Once in Egilsstaðir, you can catch a bus to Mývatn, but you will need to arrange a taxi or a tour service from there to Askja, as public transport does not reach the volcano directly. Ensure to check the bus schedules in advance as they can vary seasonally.
Hiking
If you prefer to reach Askja on foot, you can hike from the nearest access point, which is the Askja Visitor Center. This hike is approximately 20 km and can take around 6-8 hours. It's essential to be well-prepared with appropriate gear, maps, and enough food and water, as this trail can be challenging. Always check weather conditions before embarking on your hike.
Guided Tour
Many companies offer guided tours to Askja, which typically include transportation from Akureyri or Egilsstaðir. These tours often provide knowledgeable guides who can enhance your experience and ensure safety while navigating the rugged terrain. Costs for guided tours can vary significantly, so check in advance for availability and pricing.
