Car
If you are traveling by car, start from Akureyri, the largest city in the northeastern region. Head southeast on Route 1 (the Ring Road) for approximately 50 km. Look for the exit towards Route 864, which leads to the Dettifoss waterfall area. Follow Route 864 for about 30 km until you reach the parking area for Hafragilsfoss. The waterfall is a short walk from the parking lot. Note that the road can be gravel in some sections, so a vehicle with good clearance is recommended.
Public Transportation
If you plan to use public transportation, take a bus from Akureyri to Reykjahlíð. The bus service is operated by Strætó, and you can check their schedule online. Once you arrive in Reykjahlíð, you may need to hire a taxi or arrange a local shuttle service to reach Hafragilsfoss, as there are no direct public transport options available to the waterfall. It's advisable to book the taxi in advance or check with local services upon arrival.
Walking
If you are already nearby, such as near the Dettifoss area, you can park at the Dettifoss parking lot and take the walking trail to Hafragilsfoss. The trail is approximately 2 km and offers stunning views of the canyon and the river. Make sure to wear sturdy shoes, as the path can be uneven and rocky.
Use Hafragilsfoss as your starting point for nearby food, family ideas, nightlife, and more local discoveries.
