Car
If you are traveling by car, start from Akureyri, the largest town in Northeastern Iceland. Head east on Route 1 (the Ring Road) towards Egilsstaðir. After about 90 km, take a left onto Route 901 heading towards Herðubreið. Continue on Route 901 for approximately 50 km until you reach the junction with Route F88. Turn right onto Route F88 and follow the signs towards Herðubreið. The last stretch will involve driving on F-roads, which may require a 4WD vehicle. Please note that these roads can be challenging, especially in winter, so check road conditions before your trip.

Public Transportation
If you prefer public transportation, take a bus from Akureyri to Egilsstaðir. This service runs regularly and provides a scenic route through the countryside. After arriving in Egilsstaðir, you will need to rent a car or join a guided tour, as there are no direct buses to Herðubreið. Renting a car will allow you to travel along Route 1 to Route 901 and then onto Route F88 as described above. Be aware of the rental car policies regarding F-road travel, as not all vehicles are permitted on these paths.
