Car
If you are traveling by car, start from Akureyri, the largest town in the Northeastern Region. Head east on Route 1 (the Ring Road) towards Húsavík. After approximately 70 kilometers (about 1 hour), take the exit towards Route 87, then make a right onto Route 87. Continue on this road for about 40 kilometers until you reach the town of Reykjahlíð. From Reykjahlíð, follow the signs to Hverfjall, which is located about 10 kilometers (roughly 15 minutes) to the northeast. The road will lead you directly to the parking area near the crater. There may be a small parking fee, so be prepared with some Icelandic króna (ISK).
Public Transport
For those relying on public transportation, take a bus from Akureyri to Reykjahlíð. The bus service is operated by Strætó, and you can find schedules on their website. The journey takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. Once you arrive in Reykjahlíð, you can either walk to Hverfjall (about 10 kilometers) or check locally for any taxi services that can take you to the crater. Walking will take around 2-3 hours, so be sure to wear appropriate footwear and carry water. Note that bus schedules may vary, particularly in the off-peak season.
