Getting There

Car
From Skaftafell, head south on Route 1 (the Ring Road) towards Svínafell. Continue for about 7 km (approximately 10 minutes). Once you see the sign for Svínafellsjökull Glacier, turn left onto a gravel road (Svínafellsjökulll) that leads directly to the glacier parking area. Please note that this road is unpaved and may require a 4x4 vehicle depending on the weather conditions. There is no parking fee for accessing the glacier.

Public Transportation
Take a bus from the Skaftafell bus stop towards Höfn. Ensure to check the schedule for the local bus service (Strætó) as it may not run frequently. Ask the driver to drop you off at the nearest point to Svínafellsjökull. Depending on where you are dropped off, you may need to walk approximately 3-5 km to reach the glacier's parking area. There may be a fee for the bus, typically around 2,000 ISK for a one-way ticket.

If you prefer to hike, start from the Skaftafell Visitor Center and follow the marked trails towards Svínafellsjökull. The hike is about 5 km one way and will take approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. The trails are well-maintained, but ensure you are properly equipped with suitable footwear and clothing. This option is free of charge.
