Car
If you are driving from Reykjavik, take Route 1 (the Ring Road) heading east. Continue on Route 1 for about 160 km until you reach the town of Hella. From Hella, turn left onto Route 30, which will take you towards Varmahlíð. Continue on Route 30 for about 35 km until you reach a junction where you can take an unnamed road to your right. Follow this road for approximately 5 km, and you will arrive at Fosslaug, located at FJV8+MHM, Varmahlíð. Ensure you have a GPS or a map handy as signage can be limited in rural areas.
Public Transportation
To reach Fosslaug using public transportation, start by taking a bus from Reykjavik to Hella. You can check the schedules on the Strætó website or app for the latest timings. From Hella, you will need to arrange for a taxi or rideshare service to take you to Fosslaug, as there is no direct bus service to Varmahlíð. The taxi fare from Hella to Fosslaug should be around 10,000 ISK, depending on the provider and time of day. Make sure to confirm the fare before starting your trip.
Combination of Car and Hiking
If you are in the vicinity of Þjórsárdalur valley, take Route 26 towards Varmahlíð. After approximately 20 km, turn onto the unnamed road leading towards Fosslaug. This route offers scenic views and is popular for hiking enthusiasts. Park your car at the designated area and hike for about 15-20 minutes along the path that leads to Fosslaug. Bring water and snacks, as this area is quite remote.
