Car
From any location in The Highlands, head towards Route 1 (the Ring Road). If you're coming from Þingvellir National Park, take Route 36 towards Selfoss, then merge onto Route 1 heading west. Continue on Route 1 for about 40 km until you reach the town of Hveragerði. Turn left onto Route 38 and follow the signs for Rauðhólar. The destination will be on your right after about 10 km. There are no entrance fees to Rauðhólar, but ensure your vehicle has enough fuel as gas stations are sparse in the Highlands.
Public Transportation
If you're relying on public transport, take the bus from Reykjavik to Hveragerði. Buses operated by Strætó run regularly from Reykjavik. Once in Hveragerði, you may need to take a taxi or arrange a local shuttle service to Rauðhólar, as direct public transport options may not be available. It's advisable to check the current bus schedules on the Strætó website as they can vary by season. The taxi fare from Hveragerði to Rauðhólar is approximately 3,500 ISK.
Walking
For those who enjoy hiking, if you are close to Rauðhólar and wish to explore the surrounding area, you can park your car in Hveragerði and walk towards Rauðhólar. The walk will take approximately 1.5 to 2 hours depending on your pace, and will take you through beautiful landscapes. Please ensure you have suitable footwear and clothing for hiking in the Highlands.
