Car
If you're driving, start from the town of Ísafjörður, the largest town in the Westfjords. From Ísafjörður, take Route 61 south toward Þingeyri. After about 15 kilometers, turn onto Route 63 heading toward Flateyri. Continue on Route 63 until you reach the junction with Route 60. Turn right onto Route 60 and follow the signs for Dynjandisheiði. After approximately 30 kilometers, you will see the signs for Ingólfsfjörður. The drive takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on weather and road conditions. Be aware that some roads may be gravel, so drive carefully.
Public Transportation
For those relying on public transportation, take a bus from Ísafjörður to Þingeyri. Buses are operated by Strætó, but check the current schedule online as it may vary by season. Once in Þingeyri, you may need to arrange for a taxi or local transport service to reach Ingólfsfjörður, as direct public transport might not be available. It's advisable to book any necessary taxi services in advance due to limited availability. Expect to pay around 5,000-10,000 ISK for a taxi from Þingeyri to Ingólfsfjörður.
Car with Ferry
An alternative route is to take a ferry from Brjánslækur to Stykkishólmur, which offers stunning views of the fjords. From Stykkishólmur, drive back to the Westfjords via Route 60. This option is longer but provides a scenic experience. Please note that ferry tickets should be booked in advance, and costs can vary based on vehicle size and passenger numbers.
