Hi, I'm Eve. Here are a few practical things to know before exploring Reykjafoss Waterfall.
Local know-how to help you travel smarter and make the most of every moment.
Car
If you are traveling by car, start from the main town of Heimaey in the Westman Islands. Drive to the ferry terminal and take the ferry back to the mainland, which takes about 30 minutes and costs approximately 1,500 ISK per adult and 750 ISK for children. Once you arrive at the mainland, drive east on Route 1 towards Hveragerði. After about 40 km, take the exit for Route 35 towards Þingvellir. Continue on Route 35 until you reach Brattahlíð 20, Hveragerði. The waterfall is located a short hike from this address.
Public Transportation
To reach Reykjafoss Waterfall using public transportation, first take the ferry from Heimaey to the mainland. Once you arrive, you can take a bus from the ferry terminal to Hveragerði (check local bus schedules for times). Upon arriving in Hveragerði, you will need to arrange for a taxi or use a rideshare service to take you to Brattahlíð 20, as public transport may not take you directly to the waterfall. From there, you can enjoy a short hike to the waterfall.
Walking
Once you arrive at Brattahlíð 20 in Hveragerði, the Reykjafoss Waterfall is accessible by a short hike. Follow the marked trail from the parking area, which is approximately 1 km long and takes about 20-30 minutes to walk. The trail is well-maintained, but be sure to wear sturdy footwear as it may be uneven in places. Enjoy the beautiful scenery along the way!
