Car
To reach Thórsmörk by car, start your journey from Reykjavík. Drive on Route 1 (the Ring Road) towards Selfoss. After approximately 50 km, take Route 35 towards Þingvellir National Park. Continue on Route 35 until you reach the junction with Route 1. Turn left onto Route 1 and continue for about 100 km until you reach Hvolsvöllur. From Hvolsvöllur, turn onto Route 261 which leads you to the Thórsmörk area. Note that the last part of the drive involves crossing rivers, so a 4x4 vehicle is highly recommended for this section. Be prepared for a few river crossings and ensure your vehicle can handle rough terrain.
Public Transportation
To access Thórsmörk via public transportation, take a bus from Reykjavík to Hvolsvöllur. The bus service can be found at the Reykjavík Bus Terminal (BSI). After arriving in Hvolsvöllur, transfer to a specialized bus service that operates between Hvolsvöllur and Thórsmörk. Companies such as 'Trafik' or 'Reykjavik Excursions' offer daily departures during the summer months. Ensure to check the schedule in advance as the service may be limited during off-peak seasons. The cost for the bus from Reykjavík to Hvolsvöllur is approximately 3,000 ISK, and the transfer to Thórsmörk may cost around 3,500 ISK.
Hiking
If you are already in Þórsmörk and want to explore the surrounding areas, there are numerous hiking trails available. One popular route is to hike to the nearby valleys and peaks. Make sure to follow the marked trails and carry a map or GPS device. The area is well-known for its stunning landscapes and unique geological features.
