Getting There

• Car

  To reach the Bear River Massacre Site from any location in Lost River Valley, start by heading towards Highway 29 (also known as Idaho State Highway 29). If you're in the city of Mackay, head east on Main Street until you reach Highway 29. Turn north onto Highway 29 and continue for approximately 24 miles until you reach the junction with US-91. Turn left onto US-91 (also known as S 1st Ave) and drive north for about 26 miles. You will then arrive in Preston, Idaho. Once in Preston, continue on US-91 until you reach the intersection with ID-36. Turn left onto ID-36 and follow it for about 5 miles. The Bear River Massacre Site will be on your right. Look for the historical markers and parking area. Note that depending on your starting point, travel times may vary, and ensure your vehicle is fueled as there are limited gas stations along the way.

• Public Transportation

  If you do not have a car, you can take a bus from the nearest major city, Idaho Falls. You can use the Idaho Falls Public Transportation system to take a bus to Preston. Check the schedule on their website to find the most convenient route. Upon arriving in Preston, you may need to take a taxi or rideshare service to reach the Bear River Massacre Site, as public transport may not directly service the site. Prepare for the possibility of external costs for the taxi or rideshare, which could range from $10 to $30 depending on the distance and demand.
