History of Meridian

Indigenous Landscapes of the Boise Valley

Long before Meridian was established, the Boise Valley was used and travelled through by Indigenous peoples, including Shoshone and Bannock communities whose seasonal movements, knowledge of plants and understanding of the waterways were rooted in the region's geography. The valley's rivers, wetlands and open grasslands supported food gathering, hunting and travel, while later colonial expansion disrupted established lifeways and brought lasting political and social change. Meridian's modern street plan and agricultural fields therefore occupy a landscape with a much older human history, even though few visible Indigenous structures remain within the city.

Canals and Agricultural Settlement

Meridian emerged during the late nineteenth-century transformation of the Treasure Valley, when irrigation made large-scale farming more reliable in an otherwise dry environment. The New York Canal and related waterworks helped turn the plain into productive agricultural land, encouraging settlement, land speculation and the growth of local service centres. Farms, dairies and orchards became central to the economy, while the canal network continued to influence the valley's landscape.
