Located in Lincoln Park, the Ulysses S. Grant Monument pays tribute to the celebrated Civil War general and two-term President. Following Grant's death in 1885, a public campaign quickly raised funds for a memorial. Sculptor Louis Rebisso's equestrian design was selected, and the monument was dedicated in 1891 in front of over 200,000 attendees.The monument features Grant on horseback, dressed in his Civil War uniform, atop a granite pedestal. Rebisso, an Italian immigrant, had previously created equestrian sculptures of James Birdseye McPherson and William Henry Harrison. The statue was praised for its accurate depiction of Grant, with his son Frederick deeming it the "most satisfactory" portrait of his father. The monument's details include field glasses, a hat, uniform, spurs, and saddle.The monument stands west of N. Cannon Drive, between W. Fullerton Avenue and E. North Avenue. The surrounding Lincoln Park offers a green space for relaxation and recreation. While the monument has faced some criticism over the years, it remains a significant landmark in Chicago, commemorating a pivotal figure in American history.
