Following Grant's death in 1885, a public campaign quickly raised funds for a memorial. Sculptor Louis Rebisso's equestrian design was selected, and the monument was dedicated in 1891 in front of over 200,000 attendees.The monument features Grant on horseback, dressed in his Civil War uniform, atop a granite pedestal. Rebisso, an Italian immigrant, had previously created equestrian sculptures of James Birdseye McPherson and William Henry Harrison. The statue was praised for its accurate depiction of Grant, with his son Frederick deeming it the "most satisfactory" portrait of his father. The monument's details include field glasses, a hat, uniform, spurs, and saddle.The monument stands west of N. Cannon Drive, between W. Fullerton Avenue and E. North Avenue.
