The Willis Tower, an iconic skyscraper in the heart of Chicago, has been a defining feature of the city's skyline since its completion in 1973. Originally named the Sears Tower, it held the title of the world's tallest building for nearly 25 years. Designed by architect Bruce Graham and engineer Fazlur Rahman Khan of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), the tower stands 1,451 feet (442.3 meters) tall and comprises 108 stories.The building's innovative "bundled tube" structural system, conceived by Khan, allowed for both great height and open floor plans. The tower consists of nine square tubes clustered together, providing exceptional strength and stability against wind forces. This design also used less steel than traditional skyscraper designs.Today, the Willis Tower remains a major commercial hub and a top tourist destination. Its Skydeck, located on the 103rd floor, offers breathtaking views of the Chicago skyline, Lake Michigan, and, on a clear day, neighboring states. A highlight of the Skydeck experience is The Ledge, a series of glass-floored balconies that extend 4.3 feet (1.3 meters) from the building, providing a thrilling perspective 1,353 feet (412 meters) above the ground.In addition to the Skydeck, the Willis Tower features a range of amenities, including a food hall, shops, and a museum showcasing Chicago's history and culture.
