Rockefeller Memorial Chapel, a towering landmark on the University of Chicago's campus, stands as a testament to Gothic Revival architecture and the enduring legacy of John D. Rockefeller. Completed in 1928, the chapel was designed by Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue and serves as the University's spiritual and ceremonial heart.The chapel's exterior is constructed of load-bearing Indiana limestone, adorned with intricate sculptures by Lee Lawrie and Ulric Ellerhusen, representing figures from the humanities and sciences. The towering structure, reaching over 200 feet, features a 72-bell carillon, one of the largest in the world. Visitors can climb the 271 steps to the top of the tower for impressive views and to witness the carillon in action.The interior boasts a serene atmosphere with Guastavino tile vaulting, where the tiles serve a structural purpose. Stained glass windows filter light into the space, complementing the sculptures and wood carvings. The chapel is home to a magnificent E.M. Skinner organ with over 10,000 pipes. Today, Rockefeller Chapel hosts a variety of events, including religious services, concerts, university ceremonies, and guest speakers.

    From the University of Chicago's main quadrangles, walk south on Woodlawn Avenue towards 59th Street. The Rockefeller Memorial Chapel will be visible on your left, towering over the Midway Plaisance.

    From downtown Chicago, take the Metra train from Millennium Station to the 59th Street station. From there, walk one block west to reach the chapel. A single fare on Metra costs $2 - $5.
