Car
If you are driving, head to Elizabeth, IL. The Apple River Fort State Historic Site is located at 311 E Myrtle St, Elizabeth, IL 61028. From Galena, take US-20 E for approximately 20 minutes until you reach the intersection with IL-78. Turn left onto IL-78 N and continue for about 15 minutes. When you arrive in Elizabeth, turn right onto E Myrtle St, and the site will be on your left. Parking is available on-site.

If you are using public transportation, your best option is to take a bus from nearby cities like Galena or Dubuque. You will need to take a bus to Elizabeth, IL. Once you arrive at the Elizabeth bus stop, it is about a 10-minute walk to the Apple River Fort State Historic Site. Head east on E Main St toward N Elizabeth St, then turn right onto N Elizabeth St. Continue walking until you reach E Myrtle St, then turn left. The site will be on your right. Please check local bus schedules for the most current routes and fares.
