The site encompasses two earthen mounds constructed between 1200 and 1500 AD. These mounds, the largest in northern Illinois, were focal points of a village that thrived along the Des Plaines River.The site is named after the Briscoe family, who owned the land until it was sold to the state. The Illinois State Museum currently owns the 39-acre site and has plans to build a visitor center. The first survey of the mounds occurred in 1938, with a subsequent survey in 1940 revealing nine distinctive pottery pieces. An excavation in 1964 unearthed sixteen bodies, providing valuable insights into the burial practices of the Mississippian people. The mounds were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.Today, visitors can explore the grounds and reflect on the history of the site. While there is no visitor center currently, informational signage provides context and enhances the experience.
