Effigy Mounds National Monument: Ancient Earthworks

Effigy Mounds National Monument, situated in the picturesque Upper Mississippi River Valley, protects a significant piece of Native American history. Established in 1949, the monument spans 2,526 acres and contains over 200 prehistoric mounds, including 31 effigies shaped like bears and birds. These earthworks were constructed by the Woodland Indians between 800 and 1,600 years ago and served as burial and ceremonial sites.The monument is divided into two units, North and South, by the Yellow River. Visitors can explore the area via 14 miles of hiking trails, which range from easy boardwalks to more strenuous hikes. The trails offer views of the mounds and the surrounding forests, prairies, and the Mississippi River. Popular trails include the Fire Point Trail in the North Unit, which passes the Little Bear and Great Bear Mounds, and the trails in the South Unit leading to the Compound Mound and Marching Bear Group.The visitor center provides exhibits about the monument's history, the culture of the mound builders, and the natural environment. Rangers offer guided hikes and demonstrations during the summer months. The monument is a sacred site for modern descendants of the mound builders, and its preservation is essential for understanding the social, ceremonial, political, and economic life of the Eastern Woodland people.
