What began as a private convenience soon captured the attention of his neighbors, leading Graves to open it to the public in 1884 for a nickel a ride.The elevator's history is marked by resilience. After two fires destroyed the original structure, a group of local citizens formed the Fenelon Place Elevator Company in 1893. Inspired by the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, they rebuilt the elevator with a streetcar motor and steel cables, ensuring its continued operation.
