Lake Le-Aqua-Na State Park, located near Lena, Illinois, offers a blend of natural beauty and recreational opportunities. The park's name combines the town of Lena with the Latin word for water, 'aqua,' reflecting its central feature: a 40-acre lake.Developed in the mid-20th century, the park aimed to provide accessible outdoor recreation for Illinois residents. The lake itself was completed in 1956 and has since become a focal point for various activities. Visitors can enjoy swimming at the beach (open from Memorial Day through Labor Day), fish for walleye, northern pike, and channel catfish, or boat on the lake using electric motors.The park boasts over 8.5 miles of multi-use trails suitable for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. In winter, ice-fishing, sledding, and cross-country skiing are popular. Picnic areas with tables and grills are scattered throughout the park, and two picnic shelters with electricity can be reserved. Camping is available year-round, with RV, tent, and equestrian campgrounds.Lake Le-Aqua-Na's history includes minor skirmishes during the Black Hawk War, with the first permanent settler in Stephenson County building a home near the park in the mid-1800s. Today, the park is home to diverse wildlife, including deer, squirrels, and various bird species.
