    Morrison-Rockwood State Park is a popular destination in northern Illinois, offering a variety of recreational opportunities and natural beauty. The park's history dates back to 1971, when it was established and opened for day use. Its name reflects its location, blending the name of the nearby city of Morrison with the surrounding Rock Creek and the heavily wooded area known as Rockwood.The park's main attraction is Lake Carlton, a 77-acre stream-fed reservoir created in 1969. The lake is a prime spot for fishing, with anglers seeking largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and channel catfish. Boat rentals are available for those wishing to explore the lake. A two-lane boat ramp provides easy access, and private boat dockage is available for a fee.Morrison-Rockwood State Park also offers several trails for hiking and equestrian use. A 3.5-mile nature trail winds through the park, offering scenic views of the lake and surrounding woods. In addition, a 14-mile equestrian trail includes a watering well and overnight camping site. During the winter months, the park transforms into a winter sports haven, with opportunities for ice fishing, ice skating, and cross-country skiing.For those who prefer a more relaxed experience, the park features several picnic areas equipped with tables and stoves. The Lakeview picnic area offers particularly scenic views of Lake Carlton. The park's wooded areas consist primarily of hardwoods like hickory, ash, oak, and walnut.
