Pendarvis: A Cornish Mining Village in Wisconsin

Pendarvis, located in Mineral Point, Wisconsin, offers a unique glimpse into the state's lead mining history and the lives of Cornish immigrants who shaped the region. In the 1830s and 1840s, Mineral Point boomed as a lead mining town, attracting miners from Cornwall, England, who brought their expertise and building traditions. They constructed simple homes using local limestone and wood, creating a distinct architectural style that still stands today.Pendarvis itself is a collection of these restored 19th-century stone and timber cabins. The Wisconsin Historical Society now owns the site, preserving it as a museum that tells the story of Wisconsin's early lead mining era and the Cornish settlers. The site also highlights the work of Robert Neal and Edgar Hellum, who began preserving these buildings during the Great Depression. They restored several structures, naming them after Cornish places like Pendarvis, Polperro, and Trelawny. Visitors can explore the Kiddleywink Pub, Martin Cabin, and the Merry Christmas Mine Hill trails.Today, Mineral Point is known for its art scene and historic charm.
