Discover more about Villa Louis Historic Site

Villa Louis Historic Site, situated on St. Feriole Island in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin, offers a fascinating journey into the past. The site, a National Historic Landmark, was once the estate of the Dousman family, who made their fortune in fur trading and other frontier ventures. The story of Villa Louis spans centuries, beginning long before the Dousmans. Indigenous peoples inhabited the grounds for over 2,000 years, and the island served as a gathering place for trade among Native Nations. Later, French fur traders arrived, followed by free Black settlers and enslaved people brought by U.S. officers. The site was also the location of the only War of 1812 battle in Wisconsin, the Siege of Prairie du Chien. In the 19th century, Hercules Dousman purchased the land and built a Greek Revival house in 1843, known as the "House on the Mound" due to its location on a former Native American mound. His son, H. Louis Dousman, replaced it with the current Italianate-style mansion in 1871. The mansion boasted modern amenities for its time, including indoor plumbing and steam heat. The estate was later remodeled in the British Arts and Crafts style. Today, Villa Louis is a historical museum operated by the Wisconsin Historical Society. Visitors can tour the mansion, explore the estate gardens, and step onto the battlefield. The site also includes the Brisbois House, the Rolette House, the Brisbois Stone Warehouse, a commercial icehouse, and a reconstruction of Fort Crawford. The Astor Fur Warehouse functions as a museum of the fur trade.
