Car
From any location within Ferne Clyffe State Park, head southwest on Ferne Clyffe Road (County Road 28) towards the intersection with IL-34. Continue on Ferne Clyffe Road until you reach the intersection with IL-34. Turn left onto IL-34 South. Follow IL-34 South for approximately 8 miles until you reach the town of Makanda. Once in Makanda, look for signs directing you to the Panther Den Wilderness area. The entrance is located along the road, and there is a parking area where you can leave your car. Make sure to check for any parking fees, which may be required.
Public Transportation
If you are using public transportation, you will first need to arrange a ride to the closest bus stop that services the area. The nearest major bus route is in Carbondale, IL. From Carbondale, you can take a local taxi or rideshare service to get to Makanda, IL. Once you arrive in Makanda, follow the same directions as if you were traveling by car. It’s advisable to check local bus schedules and availability before your trip, as service may be limited.
Walking
If you are already nearby and prefer to walk from Ferne Clyffe State Park, exit the park and head southwest on Ferne Clyffe Road. Continue walking until you reach IL-34. Be cautious as this road may have vehicle traffic. Upon reaching IL-34, continue walking towards the town of Makanda, following the aforementioned steps to reach Panther Den Wilderness. Ensure you wear appropriate footwear and stay hydrated.
