The 25-acre preserve, owned by the Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation (JDCF), was established in 1999 thanks to a generous land donation from former Galena Mayor Robert Buehler.The preserve features a diverse landscape, encompassing hilly woodlands, a flood plain, and restored prairie. The Galena River Trail, popular with bikers, hikers, and dog walkers, seamlessly extends into the preserve from the Meeker Street footbridge. JDCF maintains a mowed trail around the perimeter, inviting exploration and appreciation of the natural surroundings. Visitors can enjoy fishing in the Galena River and bird watching. Camping, however, is not permitted.Buehler Preserve provides a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in nature without straying far from the conveniences of downtown Galena. It's a testament to conservation efforts and a valuable green space for both residents and tourists.

    From Galena's Main Street, head south towards the Galena River. Cross the Meeker Street footbridge. The Galena River Trail continues directly into Buehler Preserve. The walk is approximately 15 minutes. No costs are associated with this approach.

    The Jo Daviess County Public Transportation offers bus service to Galena City Hall. From there, walk south on Bench Street toward Jefferson Street, then turn right onto Jefferson Street. Buehler Preserve is located at 102 Jefferson Street. Check the local bus schedule for times and fares. The walk from the City Hall is approximately 15 minutes.
