Getting there

Walking

The Dowling House is located at 220 Diagonal Street in Galena's downtown historic district. From the Galena Visitor Center, walk south on Main Street towards Diagonal Street. Turn right onto Diagonal Street, and the Dowling House will be on your left. The walk takes approximately 15-20 minutes.

Driving

If driving, navigate to 220 Diagonal St, Galena, IL 61036. Parking is available nearby, but be aware of time restrictions. Check parking signs for any costs associated with parking. Once parked, it is a short walk to the entrance of the Dowling House. Street parking is available, some with 3-hour limits.

Public Transport

The City of Galena contracts with Jo Daviess County Transit to provide public transportation. General public transportation is available within the City of Galena on weekdays and Saturdays. The general fare for this service is 50 cents each way. A minimum 24-hour advance notice of the trip is required. Call 815-777-8088 for more information and a fare quote.

Overview

Step back in time at the Dowling House, Galena's oldest building, constructed in 1826 by Irish immigrant John Dowling and his son Nicholas. This sturdy limestone structure served as both the Dowling family residence and a vital trading post, offering a unique window into the life of early settlers and fur traders in the area.During Galena's boom years as the lead mining capital of the world, the Dowling House played a central role in the community's commercial activity. The first floor functioned as a trading post, while the family lived in the primitive quarters above. The house witnessed the ebb and flow of fortune as Galena's mining operations flourished and eventually waned.After decades of abandonment, the Dowling House was resurrected in the 1960s and opened as a historic house museum in the 1970s. Today, visitors can take a 40-minute guided tour of the building, complete with historically accurate furnishings and artifacts. See the original fireplace, a replica of the trading post, and a well-to-do 19th-century trader's living quarters. The Dowling House provides an immersive perspective into Galena's frontier and lead mining past.
