This sturdy limestone structure served as both the Dowling family residence and a vital trading post, offering a unique window into the life of early settlers and fur traders in the area.During Galena's boom years as the lead mining capital of the world, the Dowling House played a central role in the community's commercial activity. The first floor functioned as a trading post, while the family lived in the primitive quarters above. The house witnessed the ebb and flow of fortune as Galena's mining operations flourished and eventually waned. After decades of abandonment, the Dowling House was resurrected in the 1960s and opened as a historic house museum in the 1970s. Today, visitors can take a 40-minute guided tour of the building, complete with historically accurate furnishings and artifacts. See the original fireplace, a replica of the trading post, and a well-to-do 19th-century trader's living quarters.
