Washington County State Recreation Area: A Southern Illinois Outdoor Escape

Washington County State Recreation Area, located four miles south of Nashville, Illinois, is a premier destination for outdoor recreation in the region. Encompassing over 1,440 acres, the park boasts a diverse landscape of rolling hills, mixed hardwood forests, open meadows, and wetland areas. The park's centerpiece is the beautiful Washington County Lake, a 248-acre reservoir perfect for boating, fishing, and relaxing. Anglers can cast their lines for largemouth bass, bluegill, sunfish, crappie, channel catfish, and carp. A 10-horsepower limit for motorboats ensures a peaceful experience on the water. Two launching ramps and boat docks are available. For those who prefer to stay on land, the park offers over seven miles of marked hiking trails that circle the lake, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the area's natural beauty. Wildlife abounds, with opportunities to spot rabbit, quail, squirrel, dove, deer, and woodcock among the pines, brushy draws, and fallow fields. Hunting is permitted in designated areas, with shotgun and archery seasons for deer, turkey, and small game. The park also provides several picnic areas with tables, outdoor stoves, drinking water, and playground equipment, making it an ideal spot for a family outing. Camping is available with tent and trailer spaces, electricity, disposal, and a shower building. For a more comfortable stay, two campground cabins are available, equipped with a full-size bed, bunk beds, table, chairs, heat, and air conditioning. Washington County State Recreation Area was established in 1959 when the State of Illinois purchased 160 acres of natural area near Nashville. The lake was constructed in 1960, and additional acreage has been added over the years. Today, the park is managed by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and serves as a valued resource for both recreation and conservation in Washington County.
