Getting There

• Car

  If you are driving from any point within Matthiessen State Park, exit the park onto IL-178 N. Follow IL-178 N for approximately 2.5 miles until you reach the junction with IL-6. Turn left onto IL-6 W and continue for about 3 miles. Then, turn right onto E 3rd Rd and follow it for about 2 miles. You will see signs for Plum Island Eagle Sanctuary. The sanctuary is located at Oglesby, IL 61348, just a short distance from the road.

• Public Transportation

  Unfortunately, there is limited public transportation available directly to Plum Island Eagle Sanctuary from Matthiessen State Park. However, you can take a taxi or rideshare service (like Uber or Lyft) from the park's entrance to the sanctuary. It is recommended to check the availability of rideshare options in advance. The sanctuary is approximately 5 miles away, and the cost will typically range from $10 to $15, depending on the service and demand.

• Biking

  For those who enjoy biking, you can ride from Matthiessen State Park to Plum Island Eagle Sanctuary. Exit the park and head north on IL-178 N for about 2.5 miles. Once you reach IL-6, you can carefully navigate to E 3rd Rd, which you will follow for another 2 miles. Please ensure to wear a helmet and follow all traffic laws as this route includes sections with vehicle traffic.
