Getting There

• Walking

  If you are already within Matthiessen State Park, head towards the main trails. Look for the sign that leads to the French Canyon Trail. Follow the signs for approximately 0.5 miles. You will pass through scenic areas and may encounter some elevation changes, but the trail is well-marked. As you approach French Canyon, you will hear the sound of water and see the cliffs surrounding the canyon. The trail ends at the entrance to French Canyon, where you can enjoy breathtaking views.

• Biking

  For those who prefer biking, you can rent a bike from nearby facilities in Oglesby. Once you have your bike, enter Matthiessen State Park via the main entrance. Follow the paved road until you reach the designated bike trails. Ride along the marked paths toward the French Canyon Trail. The distance is about 1 mile, and the path is suitable for biking. Once you reach the trailhead, park your bike at the designated bike rack and proceed on foot to the canyon.

• Driving

  If you are driving to Matthiessen State Park, enter the park via the main entrance at 2500 IL-178, Oglesby, IL 61348. After entering the park, follow the signs to the parking area for the French Canyon Trailhead. Parking is available, and there is no fee for parking. Once parked, the trailhead is a short walk away. Follow the well-marked trail leading to French Canyon, which is approximately a 0.5-mile hike from the parking area.

• Public Transportation

  To reach Matthiessen State Park via public transportation, take the Amtrak train to the nearby LaSalle station. From LaSalle, you can catch the local bus (check the schedule as it may be limited) to Oglesby. Once in Oglesby, you can either walk or take a taxi to the main entrance of Matthiessen State Park. The park is about 3 miles from the bus stop. After entering the park, follow the signs for French Canyon as described in the walking guidance.
