Riverlore Mansion: A Glimpse into Cairo's Gilded Age

Riverlore Mansion, a stately white French Second Empire style mansion, is nestled in what was once Cairo's residential section, known as "Millionaire's Row". Built in 1865 by Captain William Parker Halliday, a prominent Cairo businessman and riverboat captain, the 11-room brick home reflects the elegance of a bygone era.Captain Halliday resided in Riverlore Mansion until his death in 1899. Many of the mansion's features were chosen to remind him of his time on the water. In the early 1900s, Dr. John J. Rendleman and his wife, Mrs. Rendleman, acquired the mansion. Mrs. Rendleman developed and landscaped the grounds, selecting flowers, shrubs, and trees, including the famous 100-year-old Gingko tree. The Rendleman's youngest daughter, Adelaide, transformed one of the third-floor rooms into a theater, inspiring her to pursue a stage career in New York and Hollywood.Adelaide and her husband, Frederick J. Grieve, inherited Riverlore Mansion and worked to transform it into a museum of Mississippi River history; however, the plans never materialized. In 1999, the City of Cairo purchased the home to preserve it and open it to the public. Riverlore Mansion is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, visitors can explore the mansion and grounds, stepping back in time to experience the grandeur of this historic landmark.
