Discover more about High Point Trail Shelter - Mississippi Palisades State Park

High Point Trail Shelter is located within Mississippi Palisades State Park, a 2,500-acre natural landmark in Carroll County, Illinois. The park, three miles north of Savanna, is known for its dramatic cliffs (palisades) overlooking the Mississippi River, and its rich Native American history. While the High Point Trail Shelter itself offers basic amenities for picnicking and resting, it serves primarily as an access point to the northern trail system. The High Point Trail, from which the shelter gets its name, is a 1.5-mile trail that leads to what was once a scenic overlook. Recent reports suggest that the trail is not well-maintained, with fallen trees and overgrown vegetation obstructing the path and obscuring the view from the High Point overlook. Despite the condition of the High Point Trail, the surrounding area still offers opportunities for outdoor recreation. The northern trails are generally wider and less strenuous than those in the southern part of the park, making them suitable for families and casual hikers. Visitors can explore a variety of landscapes, including wooded ravines, limestone cliffs, and riverfront areas. The park is also home to diverse plant and animal life, including white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and various bird species. Mississippi Palisades State Park also offers camping, fishing, and rock climbing. The park's campground has 241 sites, some with electrical hookups, and shower and toilet facilities are available from May through October.
