Discover more about Grosse Point Lighthouse

Grosse Point Lighthouse, a beacon of maritime history, stands proudly on the shores of Lake Michigan in Evanston, Illinois. Constructed in 1873, it was built in response to numerous shipwrecks near Chicago, most notably the sinking of the Lady Elgin in 1860, which resulted in the loss of nearly 300 lives. Residents successfully petitioned the government for a lighthouse to guide ships safely into Chicago's harbor. The lighthouse was designed by Orlando Metcalfe Poe, a renowned lighthouse engineer, and first lit in 1874. The 113-foot tower is made of brick encased in concrete, featuring an Italianate architectural style. The lighthouse complex also includes the keeper's quarters, a museum, and the surrounding park grounds. In 1976, the lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places, and in 1999, it was designated a National Historic Landmark. Today, the Grosse Point Lighthouse is maintained by the Evanston Lighthouse Park District and offers visitors a glimpse into the life of lighthouse keepers and the history of maritime navigation on the Great Lakes. Visitors can explore the grounds year-round and, during the summer, tour the lighthouse, climb to the top, and visit the museum. The Garden Club of Evanston maintains beautiful wildflower and butterfly gardens on the property. The lighthouse played a vital role in Great Lakes navigation, especially with Chicago's increasing importance as a port city. In 1941, the light was temporarily discontinued but was reactivated in 1945 as a private aid to navigation. The Grosse Point Lighthouse continues to stand as a symbol of Evanston's rich history and its connection to Lake Michigan.
