The building itself is a significant artifact, having been listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.Originally, Fire Barn No. 5 housed horses and a fire fighting carriage. As technology advanced, the carriage was replaced by motorized vehicles. The fire station remained in operation until 1991. Recognizing its historical significance, a group of citizens rallied to save the building and transform it into a museum.The museum's collection includes a variety of artifacts related to the Elgin Fire Department, such as photos, helmets, badge types, uniforms, and an 1869 horse-drawn Silsby Steamer. Among the museum's collection are several motorized vehicles. One notable piece is a Silsby Steamer engine that may have been used to fight the Great Chicago Fire in 1871.The Elgin Fire Barn No. 5 Museum is operated with the help of volunteers, including active firefighters, who provide engaging tours and share insights into firefighting techniques.
