4.7

Hofmann Tower State Historic Site stands as a testament to Lyons, Illinois' rich history. Constructed in 1908 by brewer George Hofmann Jr., the tower was the centerpiece of an extensive recreational complex along the Des Plaines River. The tower's design is believed to be inspired by bridge towers Hofmann saw in Germany. Upon completion, it was the tallest building in Illinois west of downtown Chicago. The site originally featured a dam, boat launches, and picnic groves. The dam was intended to create a deeper waterway for boats and generate electricity for the park. However, pollution in the Des Plaines River led to the park's decline, and the tower was eventually closed. Today, while the tower itself is closed to the public, the surrounding area has been developed into a well-manicured riverwalk. Visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls, picnics, and views of the Des Plaines River. The tower resembles a castle, sparking the imagination and serving as a backdrop for photographs. The site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 and remains a source of civic pride for the town of Lyons.
