In 1916, it became the first forest preserve in the United States, purchased from over 100 landowners.Today, Deer Grove West offers miles of trails for outdoor enthusiasts. There are four miles of paved trails suitable for runners, cyclists, and cross-country skiers, as well as ten miles of unpaved trails for hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. The vast trail system provides ample space for extended runs and hikes, making it a popular destination year-round. The Yellow Unpaved Loop offers a challenging hike through scenic rolling woodlands, over bridges, and near deep ravines.Visitors can explore diverse habitats and observe a variety of wildlife, including deer, foxes, and numerous bird species. The preserve also features accessible picnic shelters for relaxation and enjoying the scenery. Deer Grove West is part of the Forest Preserves of Cook County, which works to protect natural landscapes and provide recreational opportunities.
