Perched on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River, the 200-acre park encompasses the time-worn earthen remains of Fort Kaskaskia, constructed by the French around 1759. The fort was built to defend the town of Kaskaskia, which was established in 1703 and served as the first capital of Illinois from 1818 to 1820.Though the fort was small, containing just a three-room barrack and a kitchen, it played a role in regional defense and provided shelter for settlers during times of unrest. Garrison Hill Cemetery, established in 1891, holds the remains of early settlers whose graves were threatened by Mississippi River flooding. Guided tours are available Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM - 3:30 PM.
