The Old State Capitol State Historic Site in Springfield, Illinois, is more than just a building; it's a portal into the heart of 19th-century American democracy. This meticulously reconstructed Greek Revival structure served as Illinois' statehouse from 1840 to 1876, witnessing pivotal moments in the state and nation's history.Originally built in 1837-1840, the Old State Capitol was the fifth statehouse in Illinois history, the first to be located in Springfield after the capital was moved from Vandalia. Designed by architect John Francis Rague, the building housed the chambers for the General Assembly, offices for the Governor and other officials, and the Illinois Supreme Court. Abraham Lincoln served his final term as a state lawmaker here.During the 1840s and 1850s, the building was a center of political and cultural life in Springfield. It hosted dances, dinners, auctions, political rallies, and conventions. In 1858, Lincoln delivered his famous 'House Divided' speech in Representatives Hall, launching his campaign for U.S. Senate. Though he lost that race to Stephen Douglas, the building later served as his informal campaign headquarters during the 1860 presidential election.After a new statehouse was built in 1876, the Old State Capitol became the Sangamon County Courthouse. In the 1960s, the state purchased the building and reconstructed it to its Lincoln-era appearance. The original stone exterior was rebuilt, while the interior was completely reconstructed. The building was opened to the public as a state historic site in 1969. The Old State Capitol was extensively renovated in 2023-2025.Today, visitors can explore the reconstructed chambers and offices, walk in Lincoln's footsteps, and learn about the building's rich history.
