Hofmann Tower State Historic Site, Prairie State Travel Guide

Hofmann Tower State Historic Site stands as a testament to Lyons, Illinois' rich history. Constructed in 1908 by George Hofmann Jr., the tower was the centerpiece of his firm's extensive recreational complex on the Des Plaines River. Upon completion, it was the tallest building in Illinois west of downtown Chicago. The eight-story, steel-reinforced concrete structure's design is said to be adapted from a bridge tower Hofmann saw in Germany. Its castellated design features four corner turrets.Hofmann also installed a concrete dam to create deeper water for boating and generate electricity for the park's street lamps. However, after sewage influx in the Des Plaines River, the park's popularity declined, and the tower closed. Although the tower itself is currently closed to visitors, the surrounding area has been developed into a well-manicured river walk. Visitors can explore the grounds, enjoy the scenery, and learn about the tower's history. The tower resembles a castle, sparking the imagination and serving as a backdrop for photographs.The tower was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. The tower is a source of civic pride for Lyons, appearing on the town's seal and welcome signs.
