Allerton, deeply influenced by his travels in Europe and Asia, transformed the property into a breathtaking landscape of formal gardens, natural areas, and stunning sculptures.Robert Allerton officially gifted the house and grounds to the University of Illinois in 1946. His vision was for the property to serve as an education and research center, a wildlife reserve, a landscape gardening example, and a public park. The park boasts 14 formal gardens designed in the Beaux Arts/Neoclassical style, featuring meticulously pruned hedges, statues, and diverse plantings. Visitors can explore themed gardens like the Avenue of the Formal Gardens, the Fu Dog Garden (with its collection of Chinese statues), and the Sunken Garden.Beyond the gardens, Allerton Park offers 14 miles of hiking trails that wind through woodlands, prairies, and along the Sangamon River. These trails provide opportunities to observe local wildlife and appreciate the natural beauty of central Illinois. The park also includes a 40-room Georgian-style mansion, which now serves as a retreat center and event space.Visitors can enjoy various activities throughout the year, including outdoor concerts, educational events, and guided tours. The Farms: An Allerton Folk School, established in 2023, offers classes and workshops focusing on art, outdoor education, and wellness. The park is open daily from 8 am to sunset, and admission is free. The Visitor Center, open from 9 am to 5 pm, provides maps, displays, and restrooms.
