Getting There

  • Driving

    From Interstate 74, take either Exit 172 (Lombard Street/Route 47) or Exit 174 (Prairieview Road). If taking Exit 172, head north on Route 47; the entrance to the Museum and Botanical Gardens will be on your right. For Exit 174, head north on Prairieview Road, then turn left on Tin Cup Road to access the east side of the park. Parking is available near all main attractions. Note that parking areas can fill up during peak times. There is no fee to enter Lake of the Woods Forest Preserve.

Lake of the Woods Forest Preserve is a popular destination set within the rolling, wooded landscape near Mahomet, Illinois. This expansive 900-acre preserve, established in 1948, traces the Sangamon River and provides a diverse array of attractions and activities. The Mabery Gelvin Botanical Garden showcases diverse flora, offering a colorful and fragrant experience. The garden has evolved from a small plot outside the museum to its current eight acres. The garden is named in honor of Mabery, the late wife of Forest Preserve District founder H.I. Gelvin. The Museum of the Grand Prairie focuses on preserving the history of the East Central Illinois area through permanent and annual exhibits. Visitors can explore exhibits about 19th and early 20th-century life, including an exhibit on Abraham Lincoln's law practice. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy a 3.3-mile paved path for walking, jogging, and biking, which winds through grasslands, wooded areas and crosses the Sangamon River via the covered bridge. Anglers can fish in the lake, and boat rentals are available from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. The HI-Tower bell carillon and observation area offers impressive views. The Lake of the Woods Golf Course features an 18-hole course, a 9-hole par 3 course, and a practice range.
