Completed in 1876 for Edward C. Hegeler, a partner in the Matthiessen Hegeler Zinc Company, the Hegeler Carus Mansion is an outstanding example of Second Empire architecture. Designed by William W. Boyington, who also designed the Chicago Water Tower, the mansion boasts 57 rooms across seven levels, encompassing approximately 16,000 square feet. The home features intricate parquet floors, hand-painted ceilings, and ten carved fireplaces.The mansion was not only a residence but also a hub for intellectual exchange. Hegeler founded the Open Court Publishing Company in 1887, which was housed on the first floor. The company published works on philosophy, science, and religion, with Dr. Paul Carus serving as the editor. Carus later married Hegeler's daughter, Mary, who was the first woman to graduate from the University of Michigan with an engineering degree. The mansion hosted notable figures and played a role in introducing Eastern thought to the West.Today, the Hegeler Carus Foundation preserves and operates the mansion as a historic house museum. Visitors can take guided tours to explore the home's architecture, learn about the family's history, and discover the stories behind this National Historic Landmark.
