Landmarks Illinois: Preserving Illinois' Architectural Heritage

Landmarks Illinois stands as a champion for the preservation of architectural and historical treasures across the state. Established in 1971, the organization emerged from a need to protect significant buildings in downtown Chicago, and has since broadened its scope to encompass a diverse range of sites, structures, and districts throughout Illinois.Based in Chicago, Landmarks Illinois operates as a non-profit, membership-based organization with over 2,000 members. Its mission is to promote the preservation, restoration, and adaptive reuse of buildings and sites of various types, leveraging the past to shape a better future. Landmarks Illinois achieves this through advocacy, education, and various programs designed to facilitate and promote historic preservation.Over the years, Landmarks Illinois has played a crucial role in saving numerous landmarks, including the Marquette Building, the Chicago Theater, and the Reliance Building. The organization also holds conservation easements on over 400 properties, ensuring their long-term preservation.
