    From the Old State Capitol, walk approximately two blocks south on 6th Street, then turn left (east) onto Capitol Avenue. The Illinois State Capitol Building will be on your right. This is a straightforward, short walk within downtown Springfield.

    The Springfield Mass Transit District (SMTD) provides bus service to the Capitol area. Several routes stop near the Capitol Building.     From I-55, take the Sangamon Avenue exit and head east. Follow Sangamon Avenue to 9th Street, then turn right (south). Continue on 9th Street to Capitol Avenue, then turn left (east). The Capitol Building will be on your right. Parking is available at the Capitol Complex Visitors Center on College Street, with entrances on Edwards Street. Free parking is available on weekends in state employee lots. Metered street parking is also available, with varying time limits. Parking garage is located on 6th and Capitol. Parking fees vary.

    The Illinois State Capitol Building, located in Springfield, stands as a testament to the state's rich history and architectural grandeur. The current building, the sixth to serve as the capitol since Illinois was admitted to the United States in 1818, was completed in 1888. Designed by Cochrane and Garnsey, the building showcases a blend of French Renaissance and Italianate architectural styles.The Capitol's most striking feature is its towering dome, which reaches a height of 361 feet, making it the tallest non-skyscraper capitol structure in the United States. The dome is visible from almost anywhere in Springfield. The interior of the dome features a plaster circular frieze painted to resemble bronze, illustrating scenes from Illinois state history, and stained glass windows, including a stained glass replica of the Illinois state seal.Inside, visitors can explore the ornate chambers of the House and Senate, adorned with murals, sculptures, and paintings commemorating the history of Illinois. The building's design follows a modified Roman cross layout, with wings aligned to the four major compass directions. The first story houses offices and hearing rooms of the General Assembly. The second story houses the executive offices of the Governor, the Secretary of State, the Lieutenant Governor, the Treasurer, and the Comptroller.
