    From the Old State Capitol in downtown Springfield, head west on Adams Street until you reach 4th Street, then turn right. Walk north on 4th Street until you reach W Fayette Avenue, then turn left. Continue walking west for about 0.8 miles, and the Washington Park Botanical Garden will be on your right at 1740 W Fayette Avenue. Allow approximately 20-25 minutes for the walk.

The Washington Park Botanical Garden, nestled within Springfield's historic Washington Park, offers a tranquil escape into the world of plants and blooms. This 20-acre garden, established in 1985, is a major horticultural attraction in Central Illinois, inviting visitors to explore its diverse plant collections and themed gardens.The heart of the garden is the Conservatory, a 50-foot diameter glass dome housing over 150 species of exotic and economically important plants arranged by their native regions, from tropical Africa to the rainforests of South America. Surrounding the Conservatory, visitors can wander through a variety of outdoor gardens, including the Formal Rose Garden, which boasts over 3,500 plants and is the largest of its kind in downstate Illinois. Other gardens include an iris garden, perennial border, Betty Mood Smith Rockery, monocot garden, peony collection, shade garden, and Roman Cultural and Learn-to-Grow garden.Beyond its stunning plant displays, the Botanical Garden also serves as a center for education and conservation. Throughout the year, the garden hosts educational workshops, school tours, and special events such as plant sales and floral shows. Visitors can also find horticultural information through guidebooks, handouts, and interpretive labeling.Washington Park itself has a rich history, dating back to 1901. Designed by Ossian Cole Simonds, the park features rolling terrain, wooded areas, and man-made lagoons. The Botanical Garden is located in the northwest corner of the park, adjacent to the Thomas Rees Memorial Carillon.
