Cahokia Courthouse: A Step Back in Time

The Cahokia Courthouse State Historic Site offers a unique glimpse into Illinois' early history. Constructed around 1740 as a French residence, the building was converted into a courthouse in 1793, becoming the oldest courthouse in Illinois. Its French Colonial vertical log construction, known as poteaux-sur-solle, showcases the region's rich cultural heritage.For two decades, the courthouse served as a hub for political and legal affairs in the Northwest Territory. Notably, from 1803 to 1804, Lewis and Clark used the courthouse as their headquarters to gather supplies, meet with leaders, collect information, and correspond with President Jefferson in preparation for their expedition.The courthouse has a fascinating history of its own, having been dismantled and moved to St. Louis for the 1904 World's Fair and later to Chicago before being reconstructed on its original Cahokia site in 1939. Today, visitors can explore exhibits depicting court cases from the 1800s and the building's journey through time. The interior features limestone fireplaces, shuttered windows, and French-style doors, offering a vivid sense of Illinois' territorial infancy. Guided tours are available, or visitors can explore the site at their own pace. The site also hosts special events, including the Fete du Bon Vieux Temps and the Old Time Music Fete.
